ロボットと共に育った世代：ガンダム熱とプラモデルの思い出

日本人は子供の頃から、ロボットに馴染んでいます。それはもう当たり前のような感覚かもしれません。

私の世代は、あの猫型ロボット漫画の第一巻から読み始めた世代です。同時に「ブラック・ジャック」の世代でもあります。自動思考型ロボットと型破りな医者の組み合わせ。小学生低学年の放課後は、友達と漫画を回し読みするのが当たり前の楽しみでした。

その後、親の転勤で広島、そして福岡へと移り住む中で、何やら世の中が騒がしくなってきました。小学校高学年の頃、周りが騒ぎ、テレビでも取り上げられ始めたアニメ「機動戦士ガンダム」です。

当時はテレビを見せてもらえなかったため、何が起こっているのかさっぱり分かりませんでした。それでも「どんなものか」と町の小さなプラモデル店に行ってみると、ロボットが武器を持っているパッケージが並んでいます。「とりあえず買ってみよう！」と勇んで持ち帰り、家で箱を開けたのですが……なんと、それはただの「武器セット」でした。

ハンマーチェーンをドライヤーの熱で柔らかくして、自分の好きな形に作るという、まさにマニアックな仕様。人気がすごすぎて、それしか店頭に残っていなかったのです。当時の熱狂ぶりと、私の勘違いも含めて、今となっては笑い話であり、忘れられない思い出です。

Japanese people have been familiar with robots since childhood. It’s just a given. My generation grew up with the first volume of that famous cat-shaped robot manga and the Black Jack series. Reading manga was everyone’s favorite after-school activity—we’d pass them around to read, which was the norm back then.

When I was in upper elementary school, everyone around me was buzzing about a new anime called "Mobile Suit Gundam." My parents wouldn’t let me watch TV, so I had no idea what was going on. I decided to go to a small model shop to see what it was about. I saw robots with weapons, grabbed a box, and went home—only to find out it was just a "weapon set." I had to soften a hammer chain with a hairdryer to shape it! It was so popular that was the only thing left in stock. That’s how huge the craze was, and even now, the series is still going strong.
